Arctic Brontothere

Description

My entry into :iconcreature-lovers: Creature of the Week contest. This week it's Arctic Megaherbivores.

This beastie is based very loosely on Brontotherium hatcherii (which looks a lot like a giant rhino in most of the reconstructions I've seen, despite brontotheres being more closely related to horses and tapirs). The Arctic Brontothere has nasal horns adapted for scraping snow away from buried vegetation, rather than fighting. The horns are bone, and triangular in cross section, as each lobe has a pointed ridge at its front, enabling the brontothere to use its horns to crack ice. Its skull and jaws are shorter and more robust than those of typical brontotheres in order to support stronger teeth and jaw muscles for grinding tough, frozen vegetation. It also has a thick, woolly coat to protect it from biting Arctic winds.
